Muslim wedding traditions are dictated by religion and tradition, so the Muslim wedding dress is not the same for all Muslims. There are differing opinions on the Muslim wedding dress but all follow the same principle. The dress code does not allow Muslim brides to show their arms, hands and feet. Muslim brides wear a black or dark-colored wedding dress with or without a head scarf (hijab). Some Muslim families also opt for a special type of Muslim wedding dress wedding dress called the sharers which is a loose gown with a kaftan (traditional garment).

Muslim wedding wears for the groom are usually long and reach to the ankles. They are normally a white or light-colored garment with front buttons on the front and inside. Sometimes the cloth is hand-sewn and the material also differs depending on the family tradition. The most popular Muslim wedding dress types for men are the jilbab or abaya with a long tunic, or the lehenga or churidar with a short tunic and layered long over-coat (salwar). Muslim bridal wears include the mama or djembe and also the mean, which is a long gown with layered decoration and a waistline.

Muslim bridal wears come in two styles – the mean and the duenna. The mehdan is a loose sleeveless gown with a long A shaped skirt. It is accompanied by either a shawl or the dupatta (a large square piece of fabric, worn around the neck). The dupatta can be used as a head scarf. Muslim wedding dresses often come with a head scarf attached to it. The median is often adorned with colorful silks and brocade, and the dupatta with gold or silver thread embroidery.

The duenna is a long, full dress that is usually worn in a traditional Muslim fashion. The color is rich and deep red and comes in a variety of shades, such as red and black, dark blue, and deep green. The duenna is accompanied by a head scarf, and sometimes by a qameez, or loose away. A typical Muslim wedding dress has a train with a ball of silk, and a loose fitting sleeveless kameez or lehenga.

One other type of Muslim wedding dress is the jilbab. It is a short, sleeveless dress that has a square scarf-like hem. Some come with a zipper details on the back. They are available in several colors and patterns, such as black, red, white, and bright pink. A popular type of jilbab is the color combination of red and black. This can be embroidered with flower motifs, or even monograms.

Another form of Muslim wedding dress is the mehdan, which is longer than a duenna. This is generally long and reaches up to the ankles. It is accompanied by a choli, or full-length robe. The mehdan can have a long, off-the-shoulder design, or sequins, and zardosi on the borders. Muslim brides wear gold or silver jewellery, and men, an embroidered turban, or scarf.
